Length Measurer

Sub Trajectory: Measurement

Measures, knowing need for identical units, relationship between different units, partitions of unit, zero point on rulers, and accumulation of distance. Considers the length of a bent path as the sum of its parts (not the distance between the endpoints). Begins to estimate.

Other Examples:

  • "I used a meter stick three times, then there was a little left over. So, I lined it up from 0 and found 14 centimeters. So, it's 3 meters, 14 centimeters in all."
  • When measuring a bent path, the child aligns each segment with the zero endpoint, keeps track of the length of each segment, and then adds each segment together to find a total length.

Help your student become a(n) Length Measurer

Activities challenge children to combine the length measurements of a path with angles (bends or turns). Doing so using paths, children can walk on. Later "walking with fingers" along paths drawn on paper may help children develop the conception of "connected lengths.”
