Serial Orderer to 6+ (Comparing Number)
Sub Trajectory: comparing/ordering

Orders quantities (dots) or numerals to 6 and beyond. Similarly orders lengths marked into units. A significant advance at this level is the ability to correctly determine whether numerals that are not in count-list order (e.g., some are skipped) are in order (e.g., 5, 7, 9, 10) or not (7, 5).

Other Examples:

  • A child puts cards with 1 to 6 dots on them in order.
  • Given towers of cubes, a child puts the towers in order (1 to 10).

Help your student become a(n) Serial Orderer to 6+ (Comparing Number)

Activities help children place sets of 1 to 6 or more or lengths (such as made from connecting cubes) in order, by helping child count and find the next number, or carefully compare each one to be inserted to make sure it is more than all those on one side and fewer/less than all those on the other side. Important to then progress to numbers not in the count-list order. Skip counting, meaningful counting and comparison of quantities and other tasks ordering, say, 7 5, and 11, will build children's number competences.
