Identifies sides as distinct geometric objects. May say two shapes are the same by comparing many of their attributes but not all.

Other Examples:

  • Asked to find four-sided shapes, runs finger along the length of each side to find shapes that have four sides.
  • When asked to find a shape with 8 sides, chooses an octagon by counting its sides, but may not know the name of the shape.

Help your student become a(n) Side Recognizer

Activities and discussions challenge children to see sides of shapes as separate from the shape ("abstracting" them out of the shape).
