What Shape Do You See? [Shape Recognizer—Typical]

Learning Objective: Children compare different shapes in their environment. (Adapted from Lin, math notes by Clements, 2020)
Trajectory: 2D Shapes
Level: Shape Recognizer—Typical
Type: Small Group
Activity
- Read “Circle! Sphere!” or another shape book.
- Encourage children to explore objects that have different shapes
- Ask questions such as:
-
- “What happens if you try to roll this box? Let’s try it!”
-
- “Can you build a tower out of balls?”
- Other activities to explore include:
-
- Blowing bubbles with wands of different shapes Ask children: “What shape will the bubbles be? Why?”
- During playtime, invite children to compare and contrast shapes around them. Ask children questions such as:
-
- “What shape is the table?”
-
- “What shape is that toy?”
-
- “How are the shapes alike?”
-
- “How are the shapes different?”
- Accept and encourage all forms of communication as children share their responses and ideas including spoken language, sign, gesture, AAC, etc.
Adaptation Suggestions
Encourage children to feel as well as look at shapes for a multisensory approach.
Teaching Tips
- Share your ideas about shapes, using words such as "round, pointed, flat, sphere, and circle".
- Children will learn from you and soon will be able to explain their own thinking about shapes!
- This activity could be paired with a nature walk to get children outside and moving.

Different shaped objects

Remember to use formative assessment to scaffold children's thinking along the developmental progression so that all children have the opportunity to engage with challenging mathematics.
Differentiating Instructions
For children who need support
- Model exploration of different shaped objects and narrate what happens. For example, “Hmm, the box won’t roll. Why?” [E.g., it has flat faces that slide]. “Let’s try the ball!” “That rolled! Why?”
- Provide visuals of different shapes for children to compare to the objects they see in their environment.
- Trace the outline of and model labeling shapes in the environment
For children who need a challenge
- Encourage children to find less typical shapes in their environment.
- Challenge children with activities at the next level Shape Matcher - More Shapes; Sizes & Orientations.

¡Vamos a intentarlo!"
