3D Prototype Recognizer

Children can recognize some prototypical 3D shapes, such as the sphere and cube, using formal or informal names. However, may use 2D vocabulary to name some 3D shapes and describe solids using a variety of informal characteristics, such as "pointyness" or "slenderness."

Everyday experiences, play with blocks, and small group activities and all wonderful ways to introduce and use the mathematical names for 3D shapes. For example, "sphere" for balls.

Practice-based Research: Boxes are solid (three-dimensional) shapes called rectangular prisms. Their faces are rectangles. As a square is a special type of rectangle with all four sides the same length, a cube is a special type of rectangular prism in which all faces are the same square.
